This week’s topic is all about what are cosmetics, when I thought this topic, but it’s wasn’t, so let’s get straight into it…
Cosmetics are products people use to cleanse or change the look of the face or body. Cosmetic products include: skin creams, lotions, fragrance, lipstick, fingernail polishes, eye and face makeup, permanent waves, hair dyes, toothpaste and deodorants.
EYE AND FACIAL PRODUCTS
Eye and facial makeup products are products that are used to color and highlight eye and facial features. They can either directly add or alter color, or can be applied over foundation making the color even and smooth.
EYE MAKEUP
Eye makeup products include products that are used around the eye to enhance the appearance of the eyes and emphasize the beauty of the eyes. They include such products as eye-shadow, eye-liner, eye-brow products, and other products that can use to enhance and accent the eyes.

FRAGRANCE
Fragrance are products that enhance the fragrance of the body in a desirable manner. Perfumes are among the oldest cosmetic products and represent an art form that combines fragrance ingredients with a natural property of individual.
DUSTING POWDER OR BODY POWDER
Dusting powders and body powder are powders, such as talcum powder or corn starch, applied to the body to help absorb oils and moisture and impart fragrance. Dusting powders and body powders contain ingredients that help to absorb moisture and to smooth the skin.
COLOGNES, PERFURM AND FRAGRANCE MIST
Colognes are scented liquids products typically made alcohol and various fragrant oils. They are also called eau de cologne. A perfume is a product that imparts and diffuse a fragrant odor, especially a volatile liquid distilled from flowers or prepared synthetically. A fragrance mist consists of fine drops of liquid, such as water, perfume, or medication, sprayed into the air. Colognes, perfume and fragrance mist contain special ingredients that help to apply and disperse the fragrance ingredients and make sure they stay on the skin.
HAIR CARE
Hair care products are those that help to control the properties and behavior of the hair so that it can be maintained in a controlled and desirable manner. This can include hair conditioners, hair spray, hair straighteners, and relaxers, permanent waves, shampoos, rinses, tonics and dressings
PERMANENT WAVES
Permanent waves are treatment of the hair intended to produce curls or alter exciting curls. In cosmetology, it is termed a type of curl reformation.
SHAMPOOS AND RINSES
Shampoo and rinses are products that are intended to cleanse the hair. Rinses are intended to help condition the hair after shampooing. Some formulations are shampoos and rinses in the product.
HAIR STRAIGHTENERS AND RELAXERS
Hair straighteners and relaxers are products that make the hair becomes straight or to relax tightly curled hair to soften or loosen curls.
HAIR SPRAYS
Hair spray products are quick-drying liquids sprayed in the hair to keep it in place. They contain ingredients that stick to the hair and hold it in place for a short period of time.
TONICS AND DRESSING
Tonics and dressings are products that are intended facilitate combing and styling of the hair. They can be applied directly to the hair or by application to the brush or comb.
HAIR CONDITIONERS
Hair conditioners are used to make hair smooth and silky. They help by replacing materials, such as naturals oils, lost during washing.
HAIR DYE AND HAIR COLORING PRODUCTS
Hair color preparation are products that either reduce color of hair, such as hair bleaches, or products that add color to attain a desirable affect. This can be achieved either with materials that are temporary and only last a few days, to products that last several weeks.

Hair dyes and hair colors are products intended to impart color to the hair. Hair dye ingredients have been extensively test over many years and have been found to be safe. This established through the testing of individuals dying ingredients as well as the other ingredients that are used to formulate the products. In addition to ensuring the safety of the individual ingredients, hair dyes are assessed to make sure that you are not irritating or causing an unusual incidence of allergic reactions.
HAIR BLEACHES
Hair bleaches are products that lighten the color of the hair by alteration of the components in the hair. They also work through diffusion of the natural color pigment or artificial color from the hair. The hair bleaching process is central to both permanent hair color and hair lighteners. Hair bleaching ingredients have been extensively tested over many years and have been found safe. The hair safety is established through the testing of the individual ingredients as well the other ingredients that are used to formulate the product.
In addition to ensuring the safety of the individual ingredients, hair dyes are assessed to make sure that you are not irritating or causing an unusual incidence of allergic reaction.
HAIR TINTS RINSE AND SHAMPOOS
Hair tints, rinse and shampoos are products intended to shade the existing color of the hair. Tints lay be used also for applying highlighting effects to the hair. Hair tints, rinses and shampoos contain ingredients that have been extensively tested over many years and have been found to be safe. Their safety is established through the testing of individual as well as the other ingredients that are used to formulate the product.
NAIL PRODUCTS
Nail products are products that are used to color the nail, to protect them against damage, to soften and condition cuticle, and to supplement the nails. They include nail polish and enamels and nail polish and enamels removers.
NAIL POLISH
Nail polishes (also called lacquers or enamels), base coats, top coats, nail hardeners, and nail treatments re coating applied to the nail plate to provide a pleasing look and o address specific nail plate condition, such as soft, peeling or brittle nails. Polish removers are designed to soften polishes, treatments, or hardeners so that the coating on the nail can easily remove. Ingredients used in polish removes can include acetone, ethyl acetate, and isopropyl alcohol.
MANICURE AND PEDICURE
Manicure and pedicure products are designed to cleanse, exfoliate, exfoliate and moisturize hands and feet. They may contain a large variety of ingredients. Many products have multiple functions and may fall into more than one category. The major categories are as follows: Soaks are designed to cleanse and soften skin nails in preparation for the rest of the manicure or pedicure service. Due to the tougher skin on the feet, pedicure products are often formulated with coarser grit than comparable manicure products.
ARTIFICAL NAIL EXTENSION PRODUCTS
Artificial nail extensions are nail coatings applied over natural nail. They provide a protective coating for the nail plate and may extend beyond the free edge of the natural nail tip to add length.
CUTICLE OILS, CREAMS AND LOTIONS
Cuticle oils, creams and lotions are designed to moisturize, exfoliate and address a variety of cosmetic conditions of the skin in the finger nail area (i.e. dry skin or hangnails). These products serve on of three main functions: 1) to exfoliate living skin, 2) to remove dead skin from the nail plate, and/or 3) condition and moisturize the living skin around the nail area. The ingredient typically used in this category have a long history of safe use.
ORAL CARE PRODUCTS
Oral care products are intended tocleanse the oral cavity, freshen thebreath, and maintain good oral hygiene. Some products also include ingredients to protect against the formation of cavities.
TOOTHPASTES
Toothpaste are pastes, powder, liquid, or other preparations intended for cleaning the teeth. If the product is also intended to prevent the formation of cavities (carries), then it is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as an Over-The-Counter drug (OTC).
MOUTHWASHES AND BREATH FRESHENERS
Mouthwashes are used for cleaning and freshening the mouth and oral hygiene. Antiseptic and anti-plaque mouth rinses kill germs that cause plaque, gingivitis, and bad breath. Anti-cavities and that kill the germs that case bad breath is regulated as Over-The-Counter products by the Food and Drug Administration. These products must be shown to be safe and effective according to the standards set by FDA.
TIPS
Some personal care products are easy to make yourself, and this can be a great project for a party. Make your own sugar or salt scrubs or body oils, using simple, organic ingredients.
Since the beauty industry is largely unregulated, it’s up to you to do your own research to find out the safest products. There are no legal standards for personal care products labeled as “pure”, “natural” or “organic”, so look beyond the marketing claims and read labels carefully.
