Bonjour / Hello !!
Welcome back flawless beauties, so… I’ve decided to share with you a little bit of my story. Here it goes. Some twenty years ago, I was given the name Nakiba. I was born from the union of a French mother and a Jamaican father on the island of Jamaica.
to be continued …
Alors, this week’s topic is all about HOW TO CLEAN AND TAKE CARE OF MAKEUP BRUSHES
Makeup brushes are often a necessary part of your beauty routine, but if they are cared for incorrectly your face will not be too happy. Good makeup brushes are expensive, and if you invest in a great set, you must wash them properly or they’ll quickly deteriorate.

The other downside to dirty brushes is in addition to applying makeup onto you’re face, you’ll also be spreading germs and bacteria. That’s a recipe for breakouts ! Clean brushes can mean clean skin.
Do you really need another reason to get scrubbing ?
Find out what products to use for washing different types of brushes, how to dry them properly post-cleaning.
WASHING NATURAL BRISTLE BRUSHES
Powder Brush
“Brushes that are used for dry products, like powder, bronzer, and blush can be clean just once a week with a moisturizing white bar soap, like Dove Beauty Bar,” says makeup artist Nick Barose.
“These brushes can last for years”. You can also use a gentle shampoo to clean brushes ! He prefer to use shampoo for soft, natural bristle brushes or eye makeup brushes but only when the colors he use aren’t too dark, like neutrals colors.
Rise the brushes in the water and then swirl it into the soap so it lathers up. Massage through it and be sure to clean all of it, not just the tip. The same goes for if you’re using shampoo. Pretend you’re massaging your hair ! Make sure to rinse until the water runs clean”.
WASHING SYNTHETIC BRISTLE BRUSHES
Foundation Brush
“Synthetic brushes that you should be using for cream or liquid products, like lipstick, gel liner, gloss, cream blushes, foundation, and concealer should be cleaned every other day. Wetness breeds germs ! You should also invest in an alcohol-based brush cleaner for these, like the Clinique Makeup Brush Cleanser. For waxy, creamy stuff like lipstick, gloss, gel, and cream liner, you need the alcohol to break down the grease in the product. These types of brushes should be tossed and replaced every four to five months”. Says Nick Barson.
WASHING POWDER PUFFS
Powder Puff
“These are a breeding ground for bacteria ! Clean them every week with soap and warm water and know that they won’t last as long anyway, so don’t be stingy about replacing them. Your powder puff that come with the compact will not last until you finish your powder, so after many weeks of cleaning it just buy new ones”, say Nick Barose.
WASHING TWEEZERS, LASH COMBS, LASH BRUSH AND LASH CURLERS
Brow brush and Comb
Barose points out that these tools often neglected in the cleaning process, but they’re not very difficult to clean. “spray these with alcohol-based brush cleaner, like the Mac Brush Cleaner, and wipe”.
WASHING BEAUTY BLENDER
Beauty Blender
Regular makeup sponges (the inexpensive kind that come in bulk bag) aren’t meant to be reused. Microbial-resistant sponges, such as Beauty Blender on the other hand, are meant to be reused and can be safely used for three to four months. As with makeup brushes, make sure to clean your Beauty Blender at least once a week, as the sponges can become filled with skin cells and bacteria can overgrow in that area.
DRY BRUSHES
Drying makeup brushes
“Once clean, use a dry towel and gentle squeeze it around the bristles so it’s not soaking wet. Lay them on a dry towel or paper towel on a table or a counter and let the bristle hang off the edge so it’s not laying flat against the table or counter. This way you’ll protect its shape.
Always lay brushes closer to the windows. If you leave them to dry in places with no sunlight, like the bathroom, they’ll have a funny odor, like damp laundry. You can also leave them near heater (but not too close !) to dry.” says Nick Barose.
As for drying your Beauty Blender you do the same for drying as your makeup brushes expect hanging it of the edge of a table of course.
Now that you’ve been schooled on washing your brushes, taking care of your bristles starts with making sure they are protected in storage. Keep your brushes protected from your makeup in a separate pouch for your bag, always close the pouch to prevent dust from accumulating.
TIPS
How to care for makeup brushes starts with cleanliness. Since shampooing your brushes daily can be very time consuming, sanitizing spray is a great way to keep brushes clean in between shampooing. Quick dry sanitizing sprays will remove product build-up from your brushes while killing bacteria that can cause breakouts on the surface of your skin. After using your brushes, spritz them with a sanitizing spray designed for makeup brushes and gentle wipe the bristles across a clean paper towel to remove product.
DO
Gently remold the bristles into their original shape when you’re done washing. Just be careful not to squeeze them too hard (or with a towel) as this can change the shape of the brush.
Only run the bristles under water. If the wooden handle gets submerged in water, it can swell and crack. Water can also get trapped in the metal band around the brush, causing the glue to rot and brush hair to fall out.
DON’T
Don’t say old shampoo on your bristles. The formula may be too harsh for the fine brush hairs and if that’s the case you’ll ruin your brush. No, thanks ! If you don’t have a brush cleaner, use a shampoo for babies instead. The gentle, soap-free formula will clean your brushes without damaging them.
Don’t use a hair dryer to force the bristle to dry quicker. This is basically one-way ticket to ruined brushes. After washing your brushes, squeeze out as much excess water as you can, and leave them to air-dry.
Don’t leave your brushes to dry upright. Excess water can drip down into the base, which can lead to rotting. For the best results, lay them flat to dry, or you can hang them upside down from your range hood.
CONCLUSION
In this discussion, we have tried to describe how to wash different types of makeup brushes, sponges and tools, and also how to take care of them post-cleaning.
Best of luck!!
